In what has been referred to on local and international web sites as “Miss Universe Vietnam: The Pageant of Old Faces” there is another issue brewing around the nomination of previous Miss Universe contestant Hoang Khanh Ngoc.

It seems as though the host country of Miss Universe 2008 in their run-up Miss Vietnam Universe contest have one contestant that is not permitted under MUO rules and regulations and perhaps Vietnam law.

The issue about how and why one of the contestants is competing twice for Miss Universe first surfaced on the web and has remained there and off the newspapers in Vietnam and is now being dealt with in the backrooms. In the year in which Miss Universe is being held in Vietnam, where image and the country’s “face” is culturally and politically critical during a year of falling stock and real estate markets and high inflation.

Sources say that Unicorp has been informed and a letter was sent from MUO Director Annette Cammer received by Hoan Cau Group’s Mr. Tony Toan informing them that: “(MUO) does not permit an individual to compete in more than one MISS UNIVERSE Pageant. Therefore, … Miss Hoang Khanh Ngoc … is not eligible to participate in the 2008 MISS UNIVERSE Pageant.”
It is not the first time that there has been some controversy with the Miss Universe contestant in Vietnam. According to a number of official Vietnamese websites, Hoang Khanh Ngoc did not obtain official permission for attending the Miss Universe pageant in Ecuador, as she was sponsored by Thai interests. The rites holder’s unilateral decision to send Hoang Khanh Ngoc in 2004 after a sudden unexplained withdrawal of the winning contestant – perplexing Vietnamese officials.
